Ways To Teach Your Little One To Ride A Bike With No Training Wheels
The moment has come for us to take the training wheels off of our daughters' bike (I say "again" because we have tried and did not succeed at this once before with Dad having a tantrum and daughter following suit!)
So here we are, wanting to try again, with high hopes of a happy lesson and more essentially a happy daughter towards the end of the lesson. Dad has sworn to be on his proper behavior, patient, calm and ready for a lot of running alongside! Daughter is ready to be brave and is decided.
It's a lovely day; the grass is flat with the right amount of slope and cushioning. Mum has charged the video camera and is all set to shoot. Baby sister is perched on her first bike. A pretty flash wooden running bike known as a Wishbone bike that will (we hope) teach her to balance on her bike better than we have taught her big sis.
Big sister jumps on her two-wheeler. Dad and Mum exchange an optimistic look at one another and the first attempt just started. Our fledgling takes off. A little wobble. A correction. Another little wobble. A correction. And she is off. Dad makes a well-timed save from a little tumble. And then we do it over again.
Amazingly, on our second attempt together, our 4-year-old daughter has taken on riding a bike without using training wheels... Like a duck to water. An hour later and she has well and finally got the gist.
When we searched the Internet for some advices about how to teach our 4 year old to ride a bike without using training wheels we did not get too much useful advice. Therefore we thought we would give you our best ten tips. Here they are and good luck!
1. Have patience and talk it though with your child without too much significance.
2. Pick a place which has grass with a slight slope that is not too crowded.
3. Run alongside your child and hold the bike for them up to the point they say you can let go (this was our mistake the first time, we let go early and we lost her trust)
4. Continue to run together with them for as long as possible
5. Have your kid maintain the pedaling.
6. Plenty of encouragement
7. Sometimes it helps to have a friend the same age who can ride without training wheels, around as well.
8. Be patient (again)
9. Give lots of opportunity to practice
10. When your child is young enough, try a running bike or perhaps a balance bike (just like the Wishbone bike). These bikes can work from 1-5 years, so loads of longevity as well as a huge bonus... No training wheels ever!
